Harmonize and get creative with Sylvia and April in a two-part community singing event in Nanaimo: a song circle led by Sylvia, and a Sound Sculpting Playshop led by April. Come to one or both, with ginger tea in between!
1:00 - 2:20pm: Song Circle led by Sylvia Humble. Soulful, spirit-lifting songs with layers and harmonies, from the community singing movement. All songs are taught by call and response in the oral tradition; some with 3 or 4 harmony parts, and some with simple structures allowing for harmonies to arise organically in the moment. There is always room for creativity and movement, and chairs are optional. Raise and weave your voice in a collective musical experience that is rich for the ears and the soul.
~ ginger tea in between ~ please bring a mug
2:40 - 4:00 pm: Sound Sculpting Playshop with April Laurie. April creates a playful, safe and expansive experience in her vocal improv. workshops, using structures and games shaped by her training with Rhiannon, David Hatfield, and her own lived experience. “We'll practice deep listening, soften our reactions, build off of what is happening around us. Begin to believe that creativity is limitless. How do I open up? How do I let go? Where do we begin? Do I have what it takes? (and I say you do, because you are human) Come experience answers to these questions, and be surprised by the soulful, silly, mysterious, and gorgeous sounds that will happen!”
Cost: Sliding scale (to welcome folks of diverse economic access) $20 - 30 for one, $25 - 50 for both. Please choose the amount that feels both generous and affordable for you.
