Sing with April and Sylvia in the Park

  • Bowen Park, Wall Street Entrance 500 Bowen Road Nanaimo, BC Canada (map)

Sing outdoors with Sylvia and April in a playful, creative, two-part community singing event in Bowen Park: a Morning Song Circle, and afternoon Meditative Singing Walk. Come to one or both, with a picnic in between. Let’s interact with nature with our voices!

10:30am - 12:00pm: Summer Song Circle led by Sylvia Humble. Joyful, uplifting songs with layers and harmonies taught by ear, and room for creativity. No experience necessary - this is community singing!

~ potluck picnic in between ~ bring a dish to share, your own water, dishes and cutlery ~

1:00 - 2:30pm: Forest Songs - Meditative Singing Walk led by April Laurie. Circle Singing, and a "silent" walk using sights and sounds in nature as starting points for short improvisational moments using our voices. More info below.

Cost: Suggested minimum donation of $20 for one, or $30 for both.

Please RSVP on Eventbrite so we know how many to expect. You can pay there via credit card, or choose the “e-transfer or cash” option (please send e-transfers to sylvia@sylviahumble.ca and note what it’s for: August 3 morning, afternoon, or both)

Morning Song Circle with Sylvia Humble:

Do you love to sing with others for the pure joy of it? Join Sylvia for a joyful and connective song circle, and learn uplifting songs in harmony by ear (without sheet music), with room for creativity and movement. Sylvia is the founder of Humble Harmony, a non-performing, fun community singing group, and proud member of the Ubuntu Choirs Network, which believes that singing is a universal human birthright. All voices are welcome, whether you do or do not consider yourself a singer. Come sing in harmony, imperfectly! Questions? Email sylvia@sylviahumble.ca

Afternoon Forest Songs with April Laurie:

Are you curious about improvisation? April experienced a singing forest walk with master improviser Rhiannon, and was left hugely inspired, and more connected to her surroundings. With April's kind, creative, and playful leadership we will embark on this all-ages, all-skill-level adventure.

Let's slow down and notice nature. We'll create a musical scavenger hunt as we notice the sounds, smells, and sights around us. You can participate a little,  a lot, or by simply listening or dancing. How does one sing the shape of a fern, or the bend in that branch?  How do we create music, and soundscapes together to respond to a dying tree, a stone wall, a park bench, or a powerful waterfall? Please join April in exploring the possibilities,  and get ready to laugh and play. Questions? Email april.laurie@gmail.com
